Overview

The Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Canon EF is a high-performance telephoto zoom lens ideal for a wide range of photography styles. Designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, it also works with APS-C models, delivering an equivalent focal length range of 112–320mm.

Optical Performance

Tamron built this lens with advanced optical elements to ensure clarity and accurate color reproduction. It includes:

  • One XLD (extra-low dispersion) and five LD (low dispersion) elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing.

  • BBAR and eBAND coatings that minimize ghosting and flare, especially in backlit scenes.

The bright, constant f/2.8 aperture ensures consistent exposure and strong low-light performance across the entire zoom range.

Image Stabilization

The built-in Vibration Compensation (VC) system helps reduce camera shake by up to 5 stops. It supports three distinct modes:

  • Mode 1: Balanced stabilization for both the viewfinder and image.

  • Mode 2: Ideal for panning shots.

  • Mode 3: Applies stabilization only during capture, giving a more natural viewfinder experience.

Autofocus and Manual Control

A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) motor powers the autofocus system, offering fast and accurate focusing for moving subjects. You can also override the autofocus manually at any time for fine adjustments. The lens focuses as close as 3.1 feet, making it useful for tighter compositions.

Durable and Functional Design

Tamron built this lens for professional use in demanding conditions. Features include:

  • Dust- and moisture-resistant construction, along with a fluorine coating on the front element to resist smudges and dirt.

  • A metal barrel with an ergonomic design for comfortable handling.

  • Textured zoom and focus rings for better grip and control.

  • A removable, rotating tripod collar with an Arca-type compatible foot for stable tripod or monopod mounting.

Smooth Bokeh and Precise Exposure

The rounded nine-blade diaphragm creates smooth, pleasing bokeh. An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism offers more accurate and consistent exposure control, especially during continuous shooting.

Compatibility

This lens is compatible with Tamron’s optional TAP-in Console, allowing photographers to fine-tune autofocus settings and update firmware for optimal performance.
